Moving to Brisbane was something that I resisted for as long as possible. Coming from a small country town, the big city felt alien, uncomfortable, and lonely. I didn’t want to leave my family and home behind, and I didn’t want to live in a suburban house with people I didn’t know. But the inevitable happened, and a year ago I packed my bags, moved out of home, and began a new chapter in my life. The story I am telling is, ultimately, about my transition to living away from my family; creating a life for myself in the city while longing to return home every week. I’m looking at the aspects of my family and home that I miss most, as well as what I have come to love and appreciate about my life in the city.
